Eating right, staying fitter

I am not the guru on this subject, but I wanted to write down what I learned about myself through experience, without trying hard. Firstly, I will tell you I did not achieve significant results because I have been genetically blessed so far with a naturally slim/athletic frame, so its usually a little paunch dropping down to near - zero or pose-shirtless-unabashedly kinda mode. There were instances when people asked me what do i do to work out or stay fit and I yawn and tell them the fact - nothing. I did drop several pounds and a double chin in summer this year which was visibly very obvious and had friends asking me about it. But then its not entirely true - this year was the rise of my spiritual side, and a more loving attitude towards the physical envelope of my soul - giving up alcohol helped like crazy also.

It suddenly dawned on me that eating right, feeling right is about respecting your body, and this form that we have been blessed with in this life time. Its good karma to have gained a reasonably attractive form, to have no significant handicaps and an appearance that pleases most people. If some one asks me if I would like to change my physical form in the next time - I would rather keep this one. So i feel blessed.

I have had my months of lethargy and a-few-extra-pounds in my life time. Summer here in Dallas mainly emaciates me, and I did absolutely no physical exercise during the hot days, just came home and lay in bed or worked. Lost a lot of pounds though, and dropped 2 inches on waist size so looked a lot better with no paunch but felt weaker. ASAP the season changed and temperatures dropped, I felt a new energy to hit the gym again. But mainly through summer, I kept strict vigil on the food I ate. A few main things - stop white sugar completely, replaced it with agave nectar or organic brown sugar, at breakfast!! < cant stress this enough > and stayed hydrated. I did do some yoga+meditation through the year and that helped a lot. But the good weather is back and I feel stronger, hungrier and more determined to gain healthy mass - I surely have room for more. Hence began the new work out regime and I am loving my new gym. Plus I am eating right and it feels super awesome.

Breakfast is usually a strawberry+blueberry+banana+soymilk chocolate+whey shake/ Or at least a high fiber cereal+choc soy milk.
Lunch is usually from home - pita+some meat/veggie+hummus OR Mediterranean food if eating out.
Pre work out eve snack is usually eggs/cereal+soymilk/fruit.
Dinner is post workout so its usually a shake + eggs/bowl of veggie curry + little chapati or tortilla.

This routine has been working gorgeously for me, I feel energetic to run, pump weights or more if I have my breakfast and lunch correct. Recently I have been feeling pretty carnivorous too so chicken/fish for lunch helps a lot, and i can barely skip it.

Just back from watching the movie "Real Steel" and Hugh's physique is making me want to push myself further....cheers to another year of growing fitter + older... at least i know my personal goal for the rest of my life is to be able to run 30 mins on the treadmill and not let my my muscles sag by indulging in some weight training. On the cards this year is volleyball, squash, scuba diving course, fencing and being able to run longer on the treadmill. Lets see up to where i get myself :)

"And this shall pass away too"....how to make it happen

You wake up some days feeling very low, down in the pits and then you do not really know why you got into this. you wake up some days and feel bright and cheerful - but do you keep questioning yourself "Why am i so happy today?" . No you hardly ever, you just feel it and go with it. This should be applied to the days when you feel dull also, and it will all get easier. Its "not even funny" how situations can become easier once you stop asking questions.

Honestly, I am not the best at this but I have taken the tiny step long back to try to remember this - STOP ASKING QUESTIONS. PERIOD. You ask me why?? .. . there you go again...DINT I JUST WRITE THIS IN BOLD - STOP ASKING QUESTIONS. PERIOD. Simply because there is one more important sutra(a knowledge point) to remember - "Accept people and situations as they are" ... and that is the trick to getting into the "And this shall pass away too" mode.........because ASAP you start accepting, you drop the whole bag of questions. Because where will the questions get you anyways? They might lead to putting people or yourself in even more uncomfortable situations - you thought the questions were harder? Maybe the answers will be worse - in such situations "Ignorance is bliss" applies 100 percent. What you do not know does not hurt you as much....digest this or swallow it down with a pail of water, but once you get this in to your system - you can breath so much easier.

One important thing you would notice about the sutra - "Accept people and situations as they are" .... PEOPLE - very important. Its easy to fend off stuff on to other people and then keep bugging yourself "why did he do that" - No he did not. You yourself did it. You got yourself into this mess, you did something you always do or something for the first time but you goofed up.But its ok - PEOPLE includes yourself too - so pat yourself, say better luck next time or in the next round if you get the opportunity and move on - do not just sit there and be sore about it. Because every minute you feel low, you are depriving yourself of 60 seconds of peace of mind - your mental peace is in your own hands so take responsibility of guarding it, and guard it with your dayum life :) You feel low, do this - smile hard - bare all your teeth, brushed or un brushed, broken or beautiful, yellow mess or pearly whites...just do it....oooh...felt a lot better dint it...now smile harder...not just with your face but with you mind, body and soul....do it and you will feel peace taking all over you and you will be A - OK.

Meditation - I cannot emphasize it more - meditation is what lets the positive stuff stick to you and negative stuff just clings for a tiny bit but falls off right away. HEEEEEEE. I am grinning...I love this line, I love visualizing it ... and it has worked wonders for me this year in helping dropping off the loads of emotional baggage that I carried on me self (I know it needs to be myself, I just find it cute so stop correcting me :P ). working out feels good too...been doing that very regularly and it feels like you just made love to yourself...no kidding you feel like you did something real good to yourself, the pain and ache in the sore muscles just tired you out enough for your mind to stop thinking and letting stuff ease away .... eat well, sleep well, play well and then go to work. Awesome routine...no time for misery of any degree ..... did i just write that.....nice line i think .... "No time for misery" .... heheh....life is too good to be wasted in misery...every moment needs to be given the credit it deserves...

People you meet....

Why do you meet some people and why do you never meet some people? Why do you meet some people to be with them for the rest of their lives, while you meet some people and then they disappear for ever? There were kids in your school, whom you barely talked to hardly got to know them...but still you met them for a reason. I heard this somewhere from a wise person, that every single person in this world who crosses your path and you crossed her path is for a reason - something like destiny or akin to the movie "The Adjustment bureau" if you have seen it. We all have set paths and things will happen and people will be met. The experience is greater than the person, good or bad, because it happened so that it could change the course of your life for a reason.

Personally, every single hiccup or greater in my life taught me something or brought out something marvelous within me. now i know this so well that failures and bad endings do not affect me, when something is going wrong drastically i know its because " the ball is going to hit the ground and then rise back harder, may be in a different angle" - like my dad said. So i already look forward to the next greatest thing in my life when i am in a crisis situation.

I firmly believe that a person who claims - " there is nothing in this world that i cannot achieve with a true will and 100percent effort" - he/she is just bullshitting or has not come across the most impossible to turn around - types situation yet. You are bound to fail, or win, and the guilt/blame OR credit is rarely yours. True , some smaller things are in your hands, but you can change the magnitude of your success or failure with your actions - but maybe not the end result - the end result has been planned out for you and I think there are very few super human people who can actually challenge and change fate.

So when you meet the crappiest or best-est or most mediocre person ever - treat like you treat an experience - to your 100pc, coz the more you try the more you learn ,the more you will be aware of and do justice to the reason why you crossed paths with this person...

I can say all of this and know its difficult to exercise....but the more you can make it an inherent attitude, the lesser hurt or affected you start getting to be, your emotional swings can be controller quite a bit - and how do you inculcate it? Through yoga and meditation .... more on that later......

Long time......plenty of things to write about

The title is right....I haven't been blogging for so so long.....makes me thing I have been doing what I always do...notnspending enough timemwith myself....and then I decideto write down and all it takes is my new borrowed iPad from work.......the new device came in for the new project that I am leading......and I promptly got to getting familiar to it.......that's what I like about my job .... First it was the android which once again proved that I can be so stubborn and maken un educated assumptions..but I am glad the android broke my ego and made me move away from iOS devices and appreciate other techs. I like the iPad but the key board on the iOS devices absolutely needs to get the SWYPE feature. Cmon apple stop buying every company and get down to licensing the SWYPE keyboard for the iOS devices. We just need it so bad or the androidn is going to remain my favorite device to type on. Anywaysn, lots of stuff thayni need ton write about aren the new spirituality obsessions, vegas trip, SFO trip and life in general. More on that later,for now going to go back to completing my weekend tasks.

Why is it that you still pray to god before you go for your exams but refuse to believe in the powerful miracles that enlightened people are capable of? Why is it that Yoga is more popular in the western world and Indians are ashamed of embracing their own heritage of miracles?

Arent we just being plain stupid, sceptic and cynical by not believing? Why not read facts first.....

On displaying shop names and directions in native languages and being stubborn about answering only in native state language

Promoting tourism to your own state/region/city is not the responsibility of only the state govt but each of us. Why?

#1. If you feel proud of your own origins/roots/culture then there is no better way to promote it than by inviting guests(tourists).

#2.Tourism is amongst the biggest forms of revenue for the state.

Now if you understand these simple reasons, its easy to undstd why you mst communicate with tourists/guests in a common language. So making non-natives feel welcome is the best way to promote your own unique culture/identity. By being stubborn about not answering in a language other than your own native tongue, is it pride or a mere haughtiness which we are hoisting? If a Marathi speaking person in Mumbai

If a foreign visitor was spotted in your locality, dont u feel pumped up about trying to answer them in fluent English. Or would you be obstinate and try to speak to the goras-goris in fluent Marathi, Bengali, Kannada, Hindi or Tamil(or some other)? No right? Then why would you want to be obstinate and expect a Tamil visitor to Mumbai to understand your directions only in Marathi? or vice versa? Why do we become such hypocrites with our own people when we would try to show off our English speaking skills to our best had it been a European? Is is coz of the skin color....hahah..now - WE - the Brownies are not only being hypocrites but also racists within our own lands.

Maybe we cant go back and change our country and our state - but I have 322 FB friends - even if half of them share this we can propagate to a 1000 in no time..... instead of stupid Youtube videos of animals being funny or kids made to dance...these are the things at least which we should take it upon us to spread out. Building a better nation is sometimes as easy as using the share button. Can you do that?

Significance of Lord Ganesha - His Holiness SRI SRI Ravi Shankar.

An elephant's trunk has the strength to uproot a tree as well as the finesse to pick up a needle.
Ganesha's trunk symbolises the fact that the wise person has both immense strength and fine discrimination. Ganesha has large ears. The wise person hears all. He has four hands. In one and he holds a lotus, the symbol of enlightenment. In the other hand he holds a hatchet. That is, the old karma, all your sanskars, the accumulated good and bad of past deeds get cut when enlightenment comes.
The third hand holds laddus, the round sweet-meats. They are the rewards of a wise life. Ganesha is never shown eating the laddus. The wise man never partakes of the rewards of his deeds. He is not attached to them. The fourth hand is shown blessing the people. The wise man wishes the best for everyone.
Ganesha has only one tusk; the other is shown broken. There is an interesting story as to how Ganesh happened to get an elephant's head and how one tusk got broken. The symbolism of the broken tusk is that the wise person is beyond duality.
We tend to think that we end when our bodies end in the material world. We are the first person. All else is different. This duality is created by the mind which creates the ego to help us survive in this world. This 'me-other' duality is the screen keeping us from realizing our real Self, which is beyond body and mind. Once we transcend this duality, we see the entire Universe as a single whole and we become aware of our true Selves. The single tusk of Ganesha symbolises this non-duality. Wisdom allows us to see all as one and ourselves an integral part of the whole.
Ganesha is shown sitting with one foot on the ground and the other resting on his knee, above the ground. The wise person is of this earth, yet not entirely of this earth.
Ganesha is shown seated on a rat. The reason for saying that Ganesha 'rides' on the rat is that the rat is among the greediest of all animals. It will keep nibbling at whatever is available, eating everything it can. Scientifically, too, the rat's teeth keep growing and it has to keep chewing on something to keep these within limits. The rat is a symbol of our senses, which are never satisfied. They crave new experiences, new tastes. Left uncontrolled, they keep growing forever. The wise person rides on his senses. He keeps them under control.
Ganesha is often shown seated in front of a tray of sweets. In these images the rat is shown sitting in front of Ganesha, perhaps a bit to one side, looking up at him. The senses of the wise person are under his control and the rat dare not eat the sweets without the permission of Ganesha.
Ganesha is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, the God governing the life-force and the earth-mother. This symbolises the spirit and body of the wise person. Finally, the wise person has the dignity of an elephant.

When we say "Aum Ganeshaya Namah" before starting anything what we are saying is that "In what we are about to do, let wisdom be our guide". In a sense, Ganesha is our most powerful God, and he is usually remembered before starting any rituals for other deities.

which is faster ? making UIs in code or through NIB files

New interns in our team at WL had this question when we were doing the View controllers (iPhone) introduction in their first week - Which is more faster / efficient - making UIs in code or NIB?.

The answer I told them was similar to what an Apple engineer told me during WWDC - It does not matter in most cases ( though all Apple sample code is done using Nib files to the max.

I understood that we have not yet had to built such highly complex UIs in the past - so it was true that it does not matter and I had told the new interns to use whichever style they liked.

I found an article that provides some performance results on table views, and UIs in code do seem to come up with better figures in a lot of cases.

WHO ARE YOU? BRAHMA, VISHNU, MAHESH OR GURU?

There are three forces: Brahma shakti, Vishnu shakti, and Shiva shakti. You may have one of these predominant. Brahma shakti is the force to create something new. Vishnu shakti is maintenance and Shiva shakti is bringing in transformation, filling in life, or destroying.

Some of you have Brahma shakti. You may create well, but you may not be able to maintain. For example, you may make friends very fast, but it does not last long.

There are others who cannot create but are good at maintaining. For example, people have long lasting friendships but cannot make any new friends. In such cases, Vishnu shakti is dominant.

And then there are others who have more of Shiva shakti. They bring in new life or transformation or they can destroy the whole set up.

In Guru shakti, all three shaktis have blossomed fully.

So each of you first identify which shakti you have more of and aspire for Guru shakti. Guru makes a group but a group cannot make a Guru.

Cool apps I saw at the Apple seminar today at UTD

I really wana share this coz I saw the worlds coolest apps today - there is an iPhone app - Cube cheater- u take a pic of an actual Rubix cube, and the app figures how many moves and shows u how to solve the Rubix puzzle!! Same for Sudoku!! And there is a Scrabble game where you use iPhone for each player, he has stack of alphabets on his iPhone, just flick it and there is an iPad in the center acting as the main board which receives the flicked alphabet via bluetooth! There are simple , foolish and yet fascinating apps which calculate how long the iPhone was in air if you throw it up and then catch it back!! I am sorry but I am just bowled over....even if Android and Win Mo do that now, guess who made the platform to do it in the first place!!!

My thoughts on one of my best trips ever - Turner Falls camping trip with the Art Of Living folks

There is one word to describe our Turner Falls trip - AWWWWWSSSSSOMMMMMMMEEEE! I am sure you all agree :)

There is one thing I have learned from spending time with all of you people - there is a person within me who can be nice, polite and in control of unnecessary temper and the way we all behave as part of a group is probably the most closest to what differentiates humans from animals. I say this because I look back upon my other trips with other people I have had in the past - some with really really close friends. And yet having so many people together is never as easy as being with you guys. Its devoid of nasty tricks, unnecessary group- ism and wastage of hours deciding on one common thing to do! Not to mention how much time & money I have spent in the past just driving around an alien city, stuffing myself like a pig on meat, and boozing the entire night. Feels like re-birth to me :)

I volunteering to be the organizer was in fact the easiest part since I knew what great participants you guys are all gona be. The ladies took care of the food, all the guys were smart enough to figure out how to set up the tent ( I would have slept on bare ground eventually if I were alone :P ) and thanks to Venkat for taking us out to Lake Arbuckle. @Ajay - extremely pleased to have you join and we hope to see you at all our future events and get togethers :)

I have bragged and boasted all day long to my colleagues and other friends about what a fantastic group I am a part of.

To cut the story short - I have a new LIFE.

Callback Functions: Interacting with Core Audio

Many Core Audio interfaces can communicate with your application using callback functions. Core Audio uses callbacks for such things as:

Delivering a new set of audio data to your application (such as for recording; your callback then writes the new data to disk).
Requesting a new set of audio data from your application (such as for playback; your callback reads from disk and provides the data).
Telling your application that a software object has changed state (your callback takes appropriate action).

One way to understand callbacks is to reverse your perspective on who calls whom. In a normal function call, such as AudioQueueNewOutput, your application invokes behavior that is defined by Apple in the implementation of the operating system. You don’t know—and don’t need to know—what goes on under the hood. Your application requests a playback audio queue object and gets one back. It works because, in making the call, you adhere to the function interface specified in the function’s header file.

In the case of a callback, the operating system—when it chooses to—invokes behavior that you implement in your application. By defining a callback in your application according to a template, the operating system can successfully invoke it. For example, Audio Queue Services specifies a template for a callback—that you can implement—that lets you get and react to messages when an audio queue object property changes.

I owe this to Sam for clicking such wonderful pictures of our trip to Galveston. Sam has been an avid photographer for a long time now and he got himself an SLR finally. Really happy for him. I remember him saying to me few times a few years ago - he always wanted an SLR and loved clicking pics even with his Nokia 5MP cell phone camera. First look at the (An)Droid

So the beauty of working in a mobile team working on heterogenous mobile platforms is as follows - You get to see and experience pretty much every "next -iPhone-killer" handset that "noisily" appears in the market - and then dies an equally silent death.

A couple of weeks ago, my colleague Nithin and out boss returned from a disastrous conference on the Android at Austin. My boss who is a self confessed nit-picky software designer ( and he has proven this to us on numerous occasions) , came back really disappointed. The few reasons being that there were no power outlets at the conference hall and that lead to people's laptops dying outa low power even before they could write System.out.println ("I am at Austin "); :P. Secondly there was no useful coding demo for the Androids. The only saving grace seemed to be that all attendees got rewarded with Motorola's Droids! Look like refurb one but atleast the team now has two Droids that can be put on tests.

The funny incident my boss described was how the 250 odd people powered on their phones and the whole hall went buzzing with the robotic "Droid" sound that the phone makes on the tiniest of interaction( thankfully it can be turned off or people would have use the brick to hit each other in frustation ;P ).

Ok so here is the simple test we did. The same iTalk to God that sports beautifully smooth scrolling tableviews turn into miserable views on J2ME phones which need to be scratched with surgical precision to make them do what the user intends! Utterly frustating!! And this in-spite of a high quality code written by a talented Java-expert colleague. Now thats sucks rock bottom for the other biggies who launch a new J2ME "smart" phone almost every other month. Things though are a little better on the Android ( see I am not so biased after all ). The scroll views are not smooth, but much more responsive. UI experience is still the best on the iPhone and you just gota use the iPhone to know that. I was hopeful things would be really great on the Nexus One ( i owe that to Google for all my coding abilities after all ..heheheh) , but after reading Jeff's blog, my hopes have vanished again. I was also looking at Windows 7 phone demos and all I can say is its just going to be another opportunity for MS to make a big fool out of themselves.

You just got to understand the iTunes App Store from the business perspective and then you realize its the most flawless and well put together business model ever. If your business is built up of blocks A, B and C, you just so got to make them be in order before you say "ABC" in the same line. And Apple has done that with the Mac, then they got the iPods, the iTunes store and then came the iPhone which actually took the world into near sci-fi realms. And MS is simply copying that now, Windows, Zune, their Appstore and now the Windows 7 phone. Hah! how far can you go ahead copying some one else so blatantly. Google's effort is far more superior and respectable. They have done it differently, and the Nexus One will get them close. For me, it just means dumping Windows into the grave, and making sure my children will be born in a Appley - world :)

Back to Dallas

And I am back to Dallas for another long year! But not-so-surprisingly enough, Dallas feels like home ( after Pune though ) too. I guess the credit goes to a comfortable routine and independence that God has blessed me with over 2009. Well that would be unfair to say that - God's always been kind and generous, having filled my life with the most supportive set of friends and family one could ask for. And mainly because these people in my life are better than me at at least 10 different things. I have always felt happy with people who continue to inspire me with their attitude to life. Because no lessons are learned for ever, you tend to forget them and make mistakes again. That is life for a mere mortal like myself. Hence these awesome who come and go ( some geographically, some emotionally ) in my life are probably His angels sent to revise a few lessons about life. Last year ended on an awesome and yet teary note due to my buddy Sandip G moving to California. Could not have been happier for you Sandy, you have achieved what you deserved and will continue to do so, and my good wishes to you forever. We both had the best time together in my new cozy apartment. Spending a few extra bucks on and more square foot area of floor under my feet ;) was a true transition from a student in America to an almost full time working professional. We cooked some gr8 Chicken and Paneer ( I was the apprentice on most occasions ) and had the best of time as room mates. Things dont last forever for you and that is nature's way of reminding humans of their quality of adaptation which we tend to forget in after long stints in a comfort zone. It was same as moving away from Sam and Girish and our pseudo-hostel life in Pune ( oh Punayyyyyyy ). But not to forget #2318 Waterview Pkwy remains among the best apartments I have lived so far in my student life and all the guys ( Saurabh, Rohan, Bhavesh , Aditya, Jai and Vinit ) are probably like my maternal home while in my new abode. The last 3 weeks at WorldLink have been nice and happy to have them all around. Well it snowed and set new records in the USA ( 49 / 50 states in US had snowy grounds- Hawaii missed it ) and was the best snowfall I have seen in my life by far. And Vinit is back for a day on his way to California where he is proabably gone for good now - which is great for him, and yet sad coz Raj and I will so miss the amazing trio we cud have been this Spring@Dallas. But life is gona just get better this year with all my trip plans to South Padre and California in the pipeline. There is one missing element in my life this year but like a friend quoted on her Facebook status - "Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending!"

Since I must say what I must say herez my opinion on the three latest Bollywood flicks this week.

Ajab Prem Ki Gajab Kahani
Absolute disaster. The director is not sure what he means by a romantic comedy. Its more of a kids comedy film. I wonder if Ranbir is really like - able to the ladies in this one. He did a fab job in "Wake up Sid" and follows it up with a stupid character in this one. Waste. Total waste of time. Few good songs try to salvage the movie, but still fail. Katrina looks as great as always, but definitely not her classiest , stylish best in this one. The "touch me touch me " babe deserves more, just like Ranbir.

Tum Mile
A very mature, identifiable to the masses kind of love story. Reflects the regular love - ego clashes between couples. live ins, relocating for new job issues and some more. Chemistry between Imran Hashmi and Soha Ali Khan is really sweet. The film I think automatically feels more respectable with Soha in it compared to the usual Geeta Basra(s) in other Vishesh films. Fewer kissing and bed scenes in this movie are a great improvement, and the few pecks the lead pair shares are really sweet and dignified. Music score is brilliant, all songs fit the situation really well ( m sure the Kapoors and Khans envy Mr. Hashmi ). Worth watch. Better still take your girl / boy friend for a movie date and spend some really good time together watching a meaningful flick on relationships in the new world.

Typical Madhur Bhandarkar fare, realistic, good but lacks a punch unlike some of his previous work which would leave you thinking for days over social issues. Watch it or miss it, no big deal.

Making the tab bar disappear on switiching views - iPhone programming

This is one solution I hunted around for many days for Release 2.0 of iTalk to God - reason being my in ability to reference the correct views.

check out iTalk to God here first to understand the simple design.

In the Delegate method, in addition to the applicationDidFinishLaunching and applicationWillTerminate methods, add the following code to detect switch of tab bar item. Basically I wanted that on pressing the the third button item, I should see only the navigation controller and not the tab bar encompassing it. Its actually as simple as stating this requirement, instead of loading the object for the third item, you need to add only the view ( sans the tab bar controller ) as a subview to the tabBarController ( since it needs to dissappear )

Dussehra is celebrated with great fanfare in India. It is the culmination of Navaratri, observed for nine days. The tenth day of the festival is known as Dussehra or Vijayadashmi. Ramlila is the main event conducted during the day, in northern parts of the country. In the eastern state of West Bengal, Vijayadashmi is observed as the day of 'visarjan' (submersion) of the idols of Goddess Durga, after the celebrations of Durga Puja in the preceding nine days. A number of legends are connected to Dusshera, which commemorates the triumph of good over the evil. Go through the following lines to know about the legends of Dussehra.

Legends Of Dusshera
Dussehra is mainly associated with the story of Rama based on Ramayana, one of the two great Indian epics. Set around 1000 BCE in India, this epic attempts to establish the social ideals and explains the depth of human relationships. Lord Rama was the protagonist of the epic, while his wife Sita was its female lead. He has been idolized as the ideal son, husband and king, while she is the epitome of womanhood. Lord Rama was the eldest son of Dashratha, the king of Ayodhya and was beloved of all, because of his genial ways. The king decided to hand over his throne to him and retire.

Contrary to her husband's decision, Lord Rama's stepmother (Kaikayi) wanted her own son Bharata to be the king and forced Dashratha to banish Rama from Ayodhya, the kingdom and give him fourteen years of exile. Rama gladly accepted the stepmother's wishes and left the palace and the kingdom with his wife Sita, and brother Lakshmana. The grief-stricken father soon died. When Bharata, who was on a visit to his maternal grandfather, came back and came to know what his mother had done, he immediately set out to being his brother back from the forest.

Rama was glad to welcome his brother Bharata, but he refused to go back to the kingdom before the completion of his exile. Rama had another loss at hand, as the demon-king Ravana, abducted his wife Sita and took her away to his kingdom. This became the reason behind the long search and the various events that followed, which led to the destruction of Ravana by the hands of Lord Rama, with the help of the monkey army he had befriended on his way to Lanka. Dussehra is the day, when Rama killed Ravana and won back his wife. Hence, Dusshera is also called Vijayadashmi.

Dussehra celebrates the victory of good (Rama) over the evil (Ravana). This is the reason why effigies of Ravana, Meghnatha and Kumbhkarna are burnt on Dusshera, all over northern India. Apart from this, Vijayadashmi also symbolizes the victory of Goddess Durga over Mahishasura, the demon who held the earth and the swarglok (heaven) with his tyranny and invincible power. Hence, it can be said that two legends are connected to the celebration of Dussehra in India.

I encountered this error when I was uploading a 1.1 of iTalk to God ( NIV ). I had expected it since I had changed the bundle identifier in the info.plist of the originally submitted binary ( since I was trying to make the naming schemes more consistent with all our apps and I had not realized the exact purpose of the bundle identifier the first time ) and could not remember what it was.

Some quick Googling helped. To make it quicker for anyone else encountering same,

If you cannot or do not wish to redeem your code from the iPhone itself -
Steps to obtain application using promotional code.

1. Go to iTunes on your computer.
2. On the main page, find "Redeem" under "Quick links."
3. User will be prompted to enter the promotional code given above.
4. User will be asked for log in credentials for iTunes.
5. After entering the above details, the application will be downloaded on the computer in iTunes.
6. The user of the promotional code should connect the desired iPhone/iPod touch device to the computer and click on the attached device under "Devices" on the left pane of iTunes. The user will see a screen full of tabs having "summary", "info", "ringtones","music","photos","podcasts","video","applications".

7. Make double damn sure you have a back up of all your paid apps on your PC/Mac through iTunes.

I came to work and by the time I said "Good morning , Mike" to my boss he got up and asked me to launch iTunes and search for "Bible verses". My face turned into a big ? and hez like - "Just trust me and do it" and i type in and Voila! therez my lit(ttl)e-st baby iTalk to God (NIV) Lite looking upo at me with both arms raised and crying out "Mumma"! Oh, that was the moment to cherish for restof my life, it reinstated the fact that I had transformed from a non-coder to a Apple approved ( even if nothing cutting edge stuff ) coder! And that is a badge I will wear on my chest for the rest of my life!

iTalk to God finally seeing the light of the day, is like living a dream for me. Even though it's commercial success is dependent on the audience and otherwise, but as my boss puts it - we did not make a crap app, but instead a meaning ful app with well presented data that will touch someone's lives some day. And I am glad God chose me for this, what I dreamt of when back in India seems to be shaping up. Its a long way ahead and definitely not a safe or steady road ahead, but I am gona live for the moment.Surely there is a God who has plans for all of us and who leads us through life, as long as you make honorable choices. and when in doubt, use iTalk to God!

Renaming iPhone app projects

I do not intend to gain any benefits from this reuse, it has been posted simply as a permanent personal reference since it worked out very well compared to some other articles on same topic.
The credit belongs to the original author completely.

Steps :
Find within your project folder OR in the very top of the Groups and Files left vertical column in XCode project - the blue dog eared icon named XYZproject.xcodeproj. Right click on it and select Show package contents.

"Assume that the XCode project was called AppleSample.xcodeproj and it built an app called AppleSample.app. I wanted to rename the project and give it my own name. It’s not as easy as it sounds. Here are some instructions which are based off some instructions I found here (http://aplus.rs/cocoa/how-to-rename-project-in-xcode-3x/)
Copy/rename the folder into new name
Get inside the new folder and rename the .pch and .xcodeproj files. Example rename AppleSample.xcodeproj to MyCoolApp.xcodeproj — and — rename AppleSamplePrefix.pch to MyCoolApp_Prefix.pch
Delete the build folder. (Using the finder)
Open .xcodeproj file in text editor, like TextEdit. That’s actually a folder, which contains 4 files (you can also right-click and do Show package contents, which will reveal the files)
Open project.pbxproj in text editor and replace all instances of the old name with the new name. Be careful not to do a find an replace. Since the default name was AppleSample, there were several references to: AppleSampleAppDelegate.h and AppleSampleAppDelegate.m. You do not want to replace these unless you also rename that file.
Open .pbxuser where is your user name. Then repeat the previous step by renaming. I’m not sure if this is necessary. You may even be able to delete this file? But changing this file worked for me.
Load the project file in XCode, do Build/Clean all targets

After following these steps, I was able to open the project and build it to the simulator and the device. "

App information - restrictions on number of characters < 4000 characters
Key words - < 100 characters ( even if you do a word count in your text editor and keep it below the limits, you might have to tweak it a bit more to actually make it acceptable for submission )

Home screen icon - 57 X 57, needs to be .jpg/.tif file even though .png used within SDK and ROUNDED EDGES.

Large app icon - needs to be exactly same as the launch icon except in 512 X 512, .jpg/.tif format, rounded edges to match those of home screen image.

4. Main screenshot - remove status bar from the image, .jpg/.tif format

4 additional screen shots permitted - .jpg/.tif, while uploading, upload in reverse order for them to be displayed in the correct order on the app store web page.

Some more notes:

Binary submission can be delayed, rest all information as above can be filled in advance.

For distribution build -

Go to “edit project settings” in Project tab of XCode, select Build and check out the Code signing identity(actually the field below it which itself should be set to Any iPhone OS device). If you dragged the correct .mobileprovision file into XCode/iTunes, then you should be able to see that same provisioning profile option for selection next to Any iPhone OS device.) If its not available or disabled, then you have messed up your certificate or created profile incorrectly. Refer www.bigspaceship.com/blog for article on distribution of apps.

To obtain the binary, do a Reveal in Finder on the “XYZ.app” in your Groups and Files on the left vertical pane in XCode. Then once you have located it, compress it and make .zip file. This is the binary to be uploaded. Make sure you did a build after a “Clean all targets” in Build tab on top horizontal bar in XCode, after setting Distribution mode in XCode (drop down list on top left of XCode just above Groups and Files and below the red,orange,green close minimize expand buttons buttons) and also set appropriate device - not Simulator! Build using the lowest OS version you plan to support.

Bank and tax information.

It seems the bank and tax information can be submitted a little later after you are done submitting the metadata and binary ( anyways your app will not be selling the minute you submit it to Apple :) ). But make sure you enter it correctly when you do, since errors cannot be rectified through iTunes Connect. You would probably need to make some phone calls or emails to Apple.

Well, calling it a mania does not justify this wonderful habit that Americans have cultivated. In India, forget recycling - even normal dustbins are rarely found or used.

When I was working at the UTDallas library, we had a slightly mentally retarded person who used to carry a weird platypus soft toy around. But this guy was a real recycling freak. I have seen him on several occasions rummaging through the normal garbage bins and picking out water/soft drink bottles and dropping them into the allocated recycle bins. So though my supervisor and I used to have laugh at his platypus, I did consider his act as a good community service.

This is one thing India will not see very soon. And I am going to really miss it when I go back to India (which will not so soon though :) )

ArrayList Vs LinkedList

The Java SDK contains 2 implementations of the List interface - ArrayList and LinkedList.A common design dilemma for developers is when to use what ?

Some basics first:
An arraylist used an array for internal storage. This means it's fast for random access (e.g. get me element #999), because the array index gets you right to that element. But then adding and deleting at the start and middle of the arraylist would be slow, because all the later elements have to copied forward or backward. (Using System.arrayCopy())

ArrayList would also give a performance issue when the internal array fills up. The arrayList has to create a new array and copy all the elements there. The ArrayList has a growth algorithm of (n*3)/2+1, meaning that each time the buffer is too small it will create a new one of size (n*3)/2+1 where n is the number of elements of the current buffer. Hence if we can guess the number of elements that we are going to have, then it makes sense to create a arraylist with that capacity during object creation (using the overloaded construtor or ArrayList)

LinkedList is made up of a chain of nodes. Each node stores an element and the pointer to the next node. A singly linked list only has pointers to next. A doubly linked list has a pointer to the next and the previous element. This makes walking the list backward easier.

Linked lists are slow when it comes to random access. Gettting element #999 means you have to walk either forward from the beginning or backward from the end (depending on whether 999 is less than or greater than half the list size), calling next or previous, until you get to that element.Linked lists are fast for inserts and deletes anywhere in the list, since all you do is update a few next and previous pointers of a node. Each element of a linked list (especially a doubly linked list) uses a bit more memory than its equivalent in array list, due to the need for next and previous pointers.

A Test Suite is a collection of test scripts. Consider a case that we are having a set of script (.t) file. If we want to run these scripts against our application, we have to select the required testcase or we have to run the entire script file. But after the completion of that script file, the user has to manually change that to the next script file to run those testcases available in that script. Instead of that silktest provides a way to continuously select a set of script files and run those script files at-a-stretch. This can be done by creating a new Test Suite file and declare the needed script files in that suite file. To start a new test suite:
1. Select File / New.
2. Select Test Suite and click OK.
3. In that suite file enter the script file names to run continuously.
4. Save that script file.
5. Compile the script file and run it.
6. Now the process of running the script will not stop after the completion of the first script file, instead of that it will automatically pass to the next script file and run the testcases available there. Assume a case where there is a folder called silk scripts in c drive with five test script files. Here in the suite file, we are calling all the script files instead of running those script files separately. How to reset a lost MySQL root password

Windows Users:

Log on to your server as the Administrator. Kill the MySQL server if it’s running. To do this you need the Windows Services Manager, so click on the Start Menu, then go to the Control Panel, then to the Administrative Tools, and selectServices. Here look for the MySQL server and stop it. If it’s not listed there and MySQL is till running it means that MySQL is not running as a service. In that case you need to load the Task Manager which you should be able to access using the key combination of Ctrl+Alt+Del. Now kill the MySQL process.

With the MySQL process stopped you need to force a change of passwords on MySQL using a combination of the UPDATE and FLUSH options. So launch your favorite text editor and create a new file. Enter the following text into the file replacing “NewMySQLPassword” with your new password:

UPDATE mysql.user SET Password=PASSWORD(’NewMySQLPassword’) WHERE User=’root’;
FLUSH PRIVILEGES;

What the first line does is that it updates the value of the field “Password” in the table mysql.user for the user “root” to “NewMySQLPassword”. The second line flushes the old set of privileges and makes sure your new password is used everywhere. Save this text as C:\mysql_reset.txt.

Next, you need to start your MySQL server passing this file as a configuration parameter. Launch a terminal by going to the Start Menu, then to Run, and then type cmd and hit Enter. Now enter the following command:

C:\mysql\bin\mysqld-nt –init-file=C:\mysql_reset.txt

Once the server is done starting delete the file C:\mysql_reset.txt. Your MySQL root password should be reset now. Now restart your MySQL server again. Go back to the Windows Services Manager again to do that. Your new MySQL root password should work for you now.

Linux Users:

Log on to your Linux machine as the root user. The steps involved in resetting the MySQL root password are to stop the MySQL server, restart it without the permissions active so you can log into MySQL as root without a password, set a new password, and then restart it normally. Here’s how you do it. First, stop the MySQL server:

# /etc/init.d/mysql stop

Now start the MySQL server using the –skip-grant-tables option, which will run the server without loading the permissions settings:

# mysqld_safe –skip-grant-tables &

The & option at the end makes the command you have executed run as a background process. Now log on to your MySQL server as root:

# mysql -u root

It should allow you in without prompting for a password. The following steps will set the new password:

mysql> use mysql;
mysql> update user set password=PASSWORD(”NewMySQLPassword”) where User=’root’;
mysql> flush privileges;
mysql> quit

Replace “NewMySQLPassword” with your own password. Here’s what happens here. The first line selects the MySQL configuration tables. The second line updates the value of the field “Password” for the user “root” to “NewMySQLPassword”. The third line flushes the old set of privileges and makes sure your new password is used everywhere. Now, the last step is to restart the server normally and use your new root password to log in:

# /etc/init.d/mysql stop
# /etc/init.d/mysql start
# mysql -u root -pNewMySQLPassword

Congratulations, your new MySQL root password is set and your MySQL server is ready to be used again. Remember to update all your applications to use this password if you are using it anywhere.

What is the main difference between budget CPU (Pentium Dual Core) vs premium CPU (Core 2 Duo)?

Some of you might still wondering, either it is a smart choice to fork out another RM 200 to get C2D with equivalent gigahertz. Well, the truth is, both CPU are 95 % identical, which the other 5% reserve to C2D processor has higher L2 Cache size. Thats it.

Core 2 Duo processor has 2, 3, 4 or even 6 MB Cache, depend on the product code. The cheapest C2D has 2 MB cache, which around RM 400 right now. Compare to Pentium Dual Core, which has 1 MB cache, you might think, C2D is a better choice. However, think again when you see Pentium Dual Core will only cost you merely RM 200. (RM 200 cheaper to C2D same GHz)

From various benchmark, having extra 1 MB cache might improve the performance of the CPU up to 10%, depend on application. But, C2D processor will cost you another 100 percent increase ( base on Pentium Dual Core price)

However, C2D currently running on 800, 1066 and 1333 FSB. Compare to Pentium Dual Core, it is limited to FSB 800 only. For me, this limitation is an advantage for Pentium Dual Core. Mainly, because we can overclock it to 1333 MHz FSB without any much problem, since most of current mobo run at 1333 MHz without any complain. But for most user who dont give a damn about overclocking, having faster FSB might improve their system responsiveness.

Bear in mind, Pentum Dual Core is not Pentium D or Pentium 4 D. Pentium Dual Core is totally different CPU compare to Pentium 4. So, why the heck they name it Pentium Dual Core if the architecture of Pentium Dual Core equivalent to Core 2 Duo?

Simple, marketing gimmick. Intel want to separate premium segment CPU, midle segment and cheap segment CPU. C2D will represent intel CPU for premium segment, Pentium Dual Core to fight direcly with cheap AMD Athlon 64 x2 CPU and Celeron is targeted to fight Sempron.

So, back to the question. Is it worth to add another RM200 to get C2D which has same frequency with Pentium Dual Core? NO..it is not. Unless you go for 6 MB Cache Core 2 Duo processor, clocking at 3 GHz (8000 series) which will cost you around RM 600.00

Hi people,
Firstly i apologise for putting up this letter late. But the reason is something that constitutes the biggest dissapointment I have in America - Internet connectivity problems!!! Most of you think that its just an excuse from me, but unfortunately it is not. The Wireless network on Waterview (the prestigious on campus comp-lex of apartments) is quite poor. So I am infact typing this letter offline and will put it up when I am onteline.
Let me tell you about my flight. THe first time experience was quite a mixed one. I entered the flight after easy security check, its true that better check in early.That way they dont grill you much over the weight or bag contents. ANd make good use of the fact that there are a large number of maharashtrians at the various check points. So reserve your english for later, these people are happy to respond in marathi. I had good chats at many points and the security personnel relaxed a lot.
I boarded the flight and for a minute you think the biz class seats are yours, if you are flying 1st time like me. But immediately you are herded into the economy and you see chaos as indians fight for luggage space - yes, that was unbelievable for me but there was not enough luggage space. I had to stow my bags in another compartment quite far away fro my seat. I settled down into my window seat, rather I crawled, twisted and turned till I found a comfortable compromise of leg and arm space. O god, I thought. 16 + hrs this way arent going to be any fun. Maybe I am too tall or whatever but then there are a number of tall americans too who take this flight, right? Anyways, I wait for takeoff. The plane reverses back and turns right towards the runway. Then it starts crawling and suddenly the most powerful turbines slingshot you towards the horizon, and then you are airborne! Wow, that was a fantabulous feeling. The plane keeps ascending and tilts completely on its belly to turn right, and you see Mumbai bay shrinking into a small speck.
It s dark now as you leave land and fly over the seas. So nothing to look down form the window. Moreover the stupid , oversmart Indian steward smiles too much and tells you to shut off the window so that daylight may not dsiturb you. Are you nuts, I thought...we are not supposed to see daylight for another 16.30 hrs....wots this guys problem. He keeps telling me a coupleof times throughout the flight but I am adamant and I ignore him. My throat is parched probably due to the air pressure difference and I long for water. Finally they take a coupla hours and by 3am in the night meals are served. They have a great menu, these delta people. But he air-hostess(AH) is not polite enopugh as I tell her I want only chicken and not lamb or any other meat. But she is quite confused and finally hands me over something which I decide to swallow any way. The meat turns out to be great though, the quantity looks miniscule, but actually is quite filling. There is salad, yoghurt, pickle, rice, meat, and two small rotis. Burp!
Everbody sleeps now. Except I who wakes up in 2 hrs feeling claustrophobic. I feel cramped and caught somewhere, wana jump of the plane, need some oxygen...lotsa stupid things happen. I manage to squeeze past my soundly asleep neighbours' knees and rush to the loo. Wash my face with hot water and take a leak. Fine now, I returned to my seat and sleep some more. They serve breakfast again soon which is a sandwich, salad, juice, etc. But i keep it for later. Coz I am afraid to answer the nature call and there is a damn queue for the loo. ! Crap, so frustating. Later I need to pee but the loos have a waiting list. It was an unbearable ordeal but I manage to jump the line by unabashedly reuesting a guy to let me pee for 10secs. Thank God, such a relief. sounds sick but its really frustating for everyone, ladies, gentts and babies. The babies were crying throughout waiting for ther turn in the loo-queue. Hell.
I see a movie later, switch my place to the middle row next to a keralite going to SUNY Buffalo, and its good to chat with him. I get some free space here as well. We are flying over Canda. The plane goes htorugh northern Europe - sweden, greenland,norway,etc and you see glaciers below. As we near new york, we are served a snack again. Its a croissant, corn omlet and chicken. Lotsa pickle, jam and yoghurt too. And papaya and orange juice. Burp ! again.hehhe. I am pleased with delta's ambience and meals. And the plane is super smooth, no hair raising ,scary jerks any time ( which are plenty in the smaller connecting plane later).
We reach new york at 7am and wait int he immigration queue again for an hour. Then lotsa lifting the luggage at various places later, we relax at our connecting gate. I lose my boarding pass during security check and ignore the announcement for "Mister Vibhuti"(I am worried no american goan be able to pronounce my name)(. Luckily i get a copy instantly after I realise my loss. No change available anywhere for 1 dollar and infact a receptionist gives us a quarter for free. Dunno yet whether she was just generous or took us to be beggars. Hehehe....Somehow manage to call akshay's(my flight mate to dallas form pune) dad and convey message to my parents. We order a Genral Tso's chicken for 7 dollars at NY airport. It turns out to be sweet chicken in syrup. We swallow it hungrily regretting eveery bite. The connecting flight takes us to Dallas then . ISA ( Indian Student Association) student picks me up and takes me to my friend at dallas, Chaitanya's apartment - Reunited....heheeh.
The apartment is great, very spacious, panaromic view form the balcony. Two bedrooms among 6 people( 8 right now due to some visitors and temporary accomodation for new students.) Its always a mess though in the kitchen with so many people cooking and eating and a dozen greasy utensils in the sink all the time. We have a washer,dryer, heater,ac, fridge, microwave,and hot water at all taps. so its quite good and self sufficient.
It was -1 yesterday when me, chaitu and sandip walked back to our apartment at 4am from a friend's apartment. Watched Taare Zameen Par online. It was fun. It dsnt snow here.( It doesnt always snow even in -1, -2 deg but you can see ice forming on car roofs as the dew turns into ice. ) Its quite bearable int he open for 10minutes. Any open surface of your skin turns blue and you lose sensation. So we dont go out much. We have sunlight since past two days though. I opened my bank account and went to Walmart to. Bought pillow, sleeping bag and groceries there. Life seems dull here, you see only cars, no people. Ofcourse its not possible to walk around anyways in the freezing cold. Waiting for semester to begin. Chaitu says ther is no time later with loads of study. I willl put up snaps as soon as I can. Take Care all of you, I am going ot be fine. Its all good here, and nothing to worry about. Just a new chapter in life, that changes the story forever. Adios. D

Now that you have arrived, let me tell you something bout my current activities. Having finished a degree in engineering from Pune University in Information Technology , I am looking forward to a Master's program from the USA. And also hoping to meet two dear people over there - Kirat and Chaitanya.
